A Common Goal
Working together with other tribal nations, educators
and public administrators, we are building valuable resources for the
classroom in order to teach more about the California tribes. Through
annual events like the California Indian Cultural Awareness Conference,
thousands of school children, educators and community members come together
to learn about the California Native American way of life. Partnering
with educators, we have created CD-ROMs and built web sites to bring
this history to the classroom. One such educational resource is http://rims.k12.ca.us/serrano/
where students, educators and others can share our history and culture.
Today,
our people continue to celebrate the traditions of the past. Here at
the San Manuel Reservation, we sing and dance Serrano songs, as well
as the Cahuilla bird songs, that our elders have taught us. Tribes in
Northern California, such as the Yurok, perform traditional dances like
the Brush dance.
